it’s a literal scavenger hunt

In this letter, as the Sun enters Capricorn, I gift us a scavenger hunt: a game in which participants collect a number of miscellaneous objects.

The very bottom of this newsletter contains updates and links to my offerings (including a new one for 2025).

My last newsletter was long, academic, and a little frightening. Y’all loved it, and I did too. And, I thought this month we could use some aftercare.

I asked myself, what do I need right now? And the answer was fun and play and connection. So I made up a scavenger hunt game for us.

Here’s how to play: read the 7 prompts below and find the “objects” they point you toward.

These aren’t rules; they are a guide. You can do this inside or outside. You can make it take a long time or you can complete it quickly. You can do this alone or with a pal. It’s kid-friendly too!

I encourage you to record your process, but you certainly don’t have to (no rules).

Some ideas for recording: make a video of your hunt, write a simple list of your objects, turn your findings into a poem, photograph each scavenged item and then make a digital collage of them together, draw your items . . .

1. Reminiscent of the beat of the heart or the root the of beet.
   Warm, anchored, earthen.
   Find something red.

2. Let yourself be guided by your finger tips.
   Find something with a pleasing texture.

3. Everything we can see is either a source of light, or a reflection of it.
   Find something that shines, glows, glimmers, or sparkles.

4. What a gift and a curse that we humans are on a perpetual rollercoaster of emotion—constantly riding highs and lows, twists and turns with every expectation, stimulus, and surprise.
   What do you want or need to let yourself feel right now?
   Find something that helps you feel that feeling.

   Find something blue.

6. Mystery meets the moment.
   Is it random? A coincidence? A divination?
   Close your eyes and point your finger and spin around, stop when you feel called. Open your eyes—what your finger is pointing at is your treasure.
   Alternatively, grab a book and close your eyes and open to a random page, with eyes still closed, drag your finger along the page and stop when you feel called. Open your eyes—what your finger landed on is your treasure.

7. There are redwood trees and wooden houses still standing that were but seeds and blueprints hundreds of years ago.
   Who withstands time?
   What is graced with preservation?
   How often do we know the origin story of the things we hold in our hands? Humble yourself to an elder.
   Find something that is older than you are.

Here are mine: a hawthorn berry, a mossy log, an iridescent matchbook from Cat’s Paw, bouncy sprouts that brought me joy, a Blue Coast Redwood (decorated in tinsel and ornaments), “I Go Back to the House for a Book,” and a 1973 penny.
